5 Tips to Soothe + Prevent UTIs

I may work in Gynecology, but that doesn’t make me immune from my share of UTIs - even when I’m treating them on the daily. Especially when I’m running to and from patients all day in clinic, I’ll be the first to admit that I sometimes hold in my urine, increasing my risk of developing an UTI and the uncomfortable symptoms that come with them. But - UTIs don’t have to be complicated, and the solution shouldn’t be either!

Today, I want to share 5 tips to help soothe UTI symptoms, and also prevent them from forming!

  1. Wipe front to back after urinating. Bacteria, such as e.coli, like to linger around the rectum, especially after bowel movements. When we wipe front to back, this helps decrease the amount of bacteria we expose to the urethra from the rectum.

  2. Drink plenty of water. I know this can be hard when we are running around all day, but the more we empty our bladders, the less we allow bacteria to stay stagnant in our bladders and urinary tracts. I recommend drinking half of your body weight in ounces. You’ll notice an decrease in UTIs, but also an improvement in so many other facets of your health, including improved digestion and regular bowel movements.

  3. Supplement with cranberry and D-mannose, especially if you’re prone to UTI’s. Lucky for us, Cystex Urinary Health Maintenance includes Cranberry and D-Mannose, ingredients that help prevent bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract and bladder walls.  When we don’t let bacteria stick to the bladder walls and adhere to the molecules, we are able to expel them through urine. Cool, huh?

  4. Choose the right undies. Cotton underwear is my most recommended type of underwear, and you might hate me for this… Avoid thongs! I often tell my patients that thongs are in essence, butt floss. We want to separate any bacteria from the rectum from the urethra. This allows for proper vaginal health, as well as urinary tract health, by preventing bacteria and fungus from multiplying and overgrowing. If you do have to wear a thong, pick one with a cotton triangle in the middle.

  5. Empty your bladder before bed. While we sleep, it’s important that we don’t let any lingering bacteria in the urine get too comfortable in the bladder and urinary tract. And if you already have a UTI, you know how uncomfortable it can get while we sleep. Cystex PM is a new extra strength pain relief solution to help you relieve pain and enjoy a more restful night while you’re experiencing a UTI.
